Over 13 episodes we will come to learn something very odd is happening in connection with the Island. The Federal Police move in to investigate the woman’s death, but no-one is talking. Her colleague, the striking Doctor Ursula Morrell, seems to know more than she’s letting on, and Mike finds himself drawn to her cool beauty and her vulnerability.
Meanwhile, the crew of HMAS Hammersley patrol the waters of Australia’s borders, dealing with desperate refugees, drug smugglers, people smugglers, and thieves. Illegal fishing, a cyclone ravaged town and a dangerous unexploded mine are all in a day’s work – and throughout all of that they have to deal with each other.
Kate and Mike have a past; they met while he was instructing a course she was on and had a brief, passionate affair which both are now trying to put behind them. Fiesty Navigation Officer Lieutenant Nikki Caetano is less than thrilled with their new XO; Kate was her instructor on a short navigation course and had the reputation of being Princess Perfect and a hard taskmaster. Meanwhile Nikki and ET are trying to resist the simmering sexual tension between them, knowing a relationship would lead to instant dismissal. Then there’s 18-year-old Spider Webb, the newest recruit, who has everything to learn about the Navy, the sea and about life itself.
When Ursula disappears and a fisherman who was working on Bright Island turns up dead, Mike becomes more and more suspicious, but it is not until members of his own crew are mysteriously poisoned that he decides enough is enough. Mike pursues every lead, invoking the ire of the Federal police in the process, but eventually succeeds in uncovering something bigger than even he could have imagined.
And finally, after months of percolating together in a confined space, ten divergent personalities will collide on one terrifying night on the ocean when CO Mike Flynn has to choose whether to risk his crew and his beloved ship, HMAS Hammersley, against an enemy who will stop at nothing to achieve their aims.
