Lucinda Cowden (Melanie Mangel, Neighbours)

After finding fame in Neighbours playing Melanie Pearson Mangel, Lucinda Cowden moved to the UK and established a successful career as an actor, presenter and comedian. We chatted to Lucinda about her career and future plans.

We didn’t get The Power The Passion in the UK but I've seen a few episodes on tape.

Oh no!

It was quite melodramatic wasn’t it?

It was complete Hammy the hamster with a bit of cheese on the side, it was very over the top..There are a couple of clips of that which keep me going from time to time actually – on different blooper shows! There’s one where a toaster spontaneously combusts during a scene. No, The Power The Passion really was terrible, but what it did do was to give me the opportunity to learn what it was like to work on a soap, so when I went full time on Neighbours it didn’t come as so much of a shock.

You’d been in Neighbours before The Power The Passion, on a recurring basis, hadn’t you?

Yes, a recurring nightmare! I’d been on for a couple of weeks, or was it six weeks…I can’t remember, but I’d been on as Henry’s girlfriend initially and did a silly laugh and embarrassed everyone.

Do people still ask you to do the laugh?

Not if they know what’s good for them!! I hope that wasn’t your next question!

I’ll scrub that one – I’ll put a line through it! How did you end up back on Neighbours full time?

I rang the producer after The Power The Passion was axed. It was purely by chance that I rang on the day that Annie Jones, who played Jane, had decided not to re-sign her contract. So they needed someone to work in the office and my character had already worked as a temp for Paul.

So are you now in the UK for good?

Yes, I think so. I’ve got an "other half" who’s English and we’ve been together for twelve years, so I am pretty much here – you’re going to have to bear me!

And what plans have you got for this year?

Hopefully this summer we are doing Blythe Spirit in the park in Hove. We did The Importance of Being Earnest there last year. It’s a beautiful park and people bring their picnics and their glass of wine and have an entertaining evening.
